The JACK Quartet has long been a powerful voice for contemporary music, tackling the most challenging chamber repertoire with a combination of fluency and commitment. (The all-caps name originated as an acronym for the first names of the ensemble’s founding members, and has persisted even through changes in personnel.)
The quartet’s upcoming recital for San Francisco Performances will be devoted to the music of John Luther Adams, whose work revels in the sounds and senses of wide-open landscapes — especially those of Alaska, where Adams lived for many years. It’s music that rarely relies on narrative or dramatic incident, preferring to create long-breathed and often slow-moving textures that stand on their own.
“The Wind in High Places,” which is devoted to the open strings and natural harmonics of the four instruments, exemplifies this approach to beautiful effect. Also on the program are Adams’ “Lines Made by Walking,” and a single movement from his “Untouched.”
