Cine+Mas, the San Francisco Latino Film festival, is celebrating its quinceañera.
The 15th annual festival opens at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Roxie Theater with “Moe,” set in the early AIDS era and directed by San Francisco-born director José Luis Valenzuela and adapted for the screen by his wife, distinguished playwright and actress Evelina Fernandez. Sal Lopez (“Full Metal Jacket,” “Man on Fire”) is a free-spirited though gravely ill gay theater actor who is planning his one-woman show and final going away party.
Other venues at the in-person portion of the festival, which runs through Oct. 8, are Landmark’s Opera Plaza Cinemas, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Mission Cultural Center. An online version of the festival runs Oct. 8-15.
Overall, the schedule has 60 films from 15 countries, including a strong contingent of LGBTQ+-themed films, feature films and documentaries. One doc of particular interest: “100 Ways to Cross the Border” (Oct. 8 and online), Amber Bemak’s dynamic profile of San Francisco and Mexico City-based, Mexican/Chicanx performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña.
