‘Song of the North’ is a theater show of large-scale shadow puppetry that transports audiences into ancient worlds full of color, history, and stunning imagery.

Based on a poem written over a thousand years ago, Shahnameh, or the Book of Kings, chronicles the mythological and heroic traditions of ancient Persia. Since 2009, artist Hamid Rahmanian has worked to modernize and reimagine this Persian epic bringing its stories to a new generation in a variety of mediums, including books and concerts.

In his latest iteration, Rahmanian tells a love story from the 10th-century poem with cinematic shadow theater. The multi-disciplinary performance features 500 handcrafted puppets, nine actors, projected animation, music, and movement.
