Short films are how many great filmmakers get their start in Hollywood, and yet they are often curiously hard to find. A few streaming services, like the new indie-focused IVOX+, put short films front and center with the rest of their offerings, but in general interested viewers have to dig deep to find the good ones online.

It’s a pretty heavy short, especially for one that starts over an argument about getting the wrong pizza delivered.

“暗黑破坏神”（2016）
Paula Saslow, of Bay Area company Copper Rose Films, directed this gripping tale of cyclical violence. A day laborer named Angel (Xavier Galindo) discovers a briefcase full of blood money while working on a job. Initially, he doesn’t want anything to do with it or the money’s probable owner, a vicious gangster known as Diablo (Karl J. Arana), but after hearing of Diablo’s atrocities Angel decides to set a trap.
The setting on a dig site is brutal, as are the lives of its characters, but there is a grain of heroism and hope that makes the film feel transcendent.

“ Oscar Micheaux”（2017年）
Director Jamie “JD” Walker, now based in Los Angeles but originally from Hayward, has taken several shots at dramatizing the life of renowned Black author and film pioneer Oscar Micheaux. This short stars Napoleon Douglas as a young Micheaux, who realizes that he will have to distribute his own films if he’s ever to make a movie where Black people are heroes instead of stereotypes.

Jon V. Peters and Bay Area company Athena Studios brought to life this charming and enchanting stop-motion tale about mermaids on Mars.

San Francisco Film School graduate Brandon Hamilton directed and starred in the bizarre but intriguing noir pastiche “The Man From Hades.” Jack Orpheus (Hamilton) is a private eye who has left the gangster life behind only to get dragged back in by, what else, a dame (Camelia Dee).
