For fans of Headlands Center for the Arts looking for programming closer to San Francisco, “Pictures of You” at the Mission District venue the Lab is waiting.
Showcasing the work of Headlands’ 2022-23 graduate fellows Lexygius Sanchez Calip, Shao-Feng Hsu, Markus Kager, Ahn Lee, Joshua Moreno, Nicole Shaffer and Whitney Vangrin, “Pictures of You” takes its title from the 1990 song by the Cure. Although the exhibition pays homage to the goth-pop anthem, the title also serves as a metaphor for experiencing loss and filling the void.
Among the mediums featured are photographic works by Hsu, sculpture by Shaffer, ceramics by Lee, video by Calip and Vangrin, works on paper by Moreno and paintings by Kager.
The show is the culmination of the center’s Graduate Fellowships, a core tenet of Headlands programming, and part of the organization’s post-pandemic push for more accessible, off-site programming. If you haven’t been able to make it to the Headlands campus yet, this show will be a worthy introduction to the art and artists fostered by this 40-year-old Bay Area institution.
