Halloween will be just past by then, but the program for the season-opening program by the New Century Chamber Orchestra and Music Director Daniel Hope, titled “Visitations,” promises enough otherworldly chills and thrills to keep the holiday going a little longer.

It’s a fertile thematic field to explore, covering death, the afterlife, the supernatural and more. Among the highlights of a promisingly eclectic lineup are “Elegy: A Cry from the Grave” by Carlos Simon, Paul Dukas’ famous story of magic and mischief “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Franz Schubert’s sublimely spook song “Der Erlkönig,” and a commissioned world premiere from composer Nicolás Lell Benavides about Doña Sebastiana, Lady Death of the American Southwest.

The eloquent mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor joins the chamber orchestra and a group of eight singers. And for extra vibes, the concert promises to be candle-lit.
