Local clown legend Sara Toby Moore has been exploring and exploding what the clowning artform can bring to theater.
In their newly revised show “Atomic Comic” (which ran a sneak preview in November 2019), Moore creates what they call a “human cartoon fantasia” with a style that combines hyper-physical comedy, fast-quipping dialogue and musical numbers that set a surreal pace. The autobiographical show explores a string of tragedies: cancer, a devastating breakup and the death of a parent during the early pandemic lockdown. Through it all, Moore uses their skills as a clown and an artist to construct a narrative of survival through humor.
In addition to Moore, the cast includes Colin Johnson, Sharon Shao and DeMarcello Funes with cameos by George Maguire and Maureen McVerry. “Cagney & Lacey” and “Queer as Folk” star Sharon Gless appears as Moore’s therapist via special filmed sequences. In their career, Moore has developed a theatrical language all their own and continues to push the genre’s boundaries.
